Ok, I have found the problem and have a fix in the 1.3.x CVS branch (see http://wiki.jboss.org/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=JBossCache for branch info).
I;ve tested this on WL815 so far, and after more QA on other app servers, this will make it into a service pack for 1.3.0. If you guys want, I'd recommend getting the srcs from CVS, building it and giving it a try, see if it solves your problems.
