I suspect your lookup is incorrect. The default jndi binding is 
"ear-name/bean-name/remote". In this case you have the lookup containing 
thebean interface name (ItemDAO). If Item is the session bean interface and 
ItemBean is the bean class, the lookup would be:

Item item = (Item)ctx.lookup("wsmp/ItemBean/remote");

The packaging should contain the .war and ejb3 .jar in wsmp.ear. Since you are 
doing a lookup in the global jndi tree, there is no need for a reference in 
web.xml.
