Are you trying to store java 1.5 Enums as VariableInstances? I'm trying to do 
the same thing .. but I think I took a different approach. Instead of creating 
a Hibernate user type, I created a JBPM converter (convert(), revert()).

I can't get this to work, though - because of a problem with Hibernate when I 
try to do a Criteria query against a VariableInstance using the Enum (because 
the Enum is stored in the DB as a StringType)
