I realized that we will probably remove the JBoss JMX dependency in the 2.0 series, where we do heavy refactoring anyway. But, looking at your issue, now I don't think this is related to JMX. Are you using the TreeCacheMarshaller (set it to true) ? This is described in the docs, I suggest (a) use the 1.4 beta and enable the TreeCacheMarshaller.
