This issue is resolved.  I found the following workaround in the wiki:

I rechecked my log files and found that the Data truncation: Data too long for 
column 'jbp_viewrealemail' at row 1 error had shown up at installation time.  I 
had not noticed it earlier.

The steps I followed to resolve this are:
1. Applied the workaround
2. Restarted mysql instance, since the my.ini was changed.
3. I wiped out all the tables in the jbossportal database.
4. I restarted the appserver, the tables got re-created and populated correctly.
