Sorry, looks like I just needed a more up-to-date JVM. I switched to 1.5.0_07 and everything seem to be working correctly now. It might not hurt to mention that older versions of 1.5.0 are not compatible with EJB3, but hopefully most people will figure it out fairly easily.
