I'm not Dain, but i think I can help you.

I don't recommend checking out the cvs HEAD version of JBoss unless you 
are interested in helping to debug it. The HEAD version is the current 
development tree for JBoss 3.1.

Therefore, you probably want to check out the "Branch_3_0" cvs branch.

ie. cvs checkout -r Branch_3_0 jboss-all
  or cvs update -P -r Branch_3_0 jboss-all

This builds a version of JBoss 3.0.1. It is *not* the fornal release, 
but it is currently in pretty good shape. I will be moving all of our 
developers from JBoss 3.0 to this build in the next few days because the 
CMR bug fix is important to us - and it is most definitely fixed.
