We came across the same bug. Of course, it was our own fault. The problem is that you only get a principal if the page from where you are calling is specified as a secured page. So, even if the user has logged in correctly, if they move to a public page (one which has no security context) then your principal is gone. Of course, if they go back to a secured page, their principal comes back.

How to specify that a page is secured ? running it through https ? adding some tags ?
I think I need a rest ... I feel like an octopus changing things here and there !
