Funny, I just saw this yesterday on a colleague's Windows installation.
JBoss should win an award for its cryptic diagnostics. :-)
The problem for her was a corrupt server/default/data directory.
Shut down JBoss, delete server/XXX/data and server/XXX/tmp (where XXX is
all, default, or minimal) and try starting JBoss up again.
If that solves your problem, you probably need to think about either
insisting on clean shutdowns or grafting such deletion into your startup
scripts.
