do a ps ax as root and you will probably see the following processes running :
- cron.daily
- updatedb
- run-parts
and another one i can't remember the name of.
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/custom-guide/s1-autotasks-anacron.html should help you to disable the job that is run

After roughly a week many of the boxes start to experience weird problems where JBoss is unable to get what looks to be socket connections.
