I think that I found the solution to my problem.  The
org.jnp.interfaces package contains a custom socket factory that
uses two properties.  jnp.timeout is used to determine how long
an initial socket connection will wait until it times out, and
jnp.sotimeout determines how long a socket read will block
before it times out.  All you have to do is specify these
properties when creating your InitialContext.

It would sure be nice if this was a documented feature! :p
