That sounds suprisingly like IE actually being compliant.

Underscores aren't a valid character for a hostname. MOST dns installs don't care. But you should talk to your IT guy and plan on removing them, just for sanity's sake. Bind 9 (and a couple others) WILL have a problem with them, so upgrading could be an issue.
