When you mentioned JAAS config, I realized I put some entries in 
$JAVA_HOME\jre\lib\security\java.policy file. Restoring the file to its original 
content did the trick. Though it makes sense, I have no clue how this percolates up to 
PersistenceManager in JBoss but hey it works now. Thanks Adrian.
