I am suffering the same today but then with Postgres. The WIKI http://www.jboss.org/wiki/Wiki.jsp?page=ConfigJBossMQDB gives a good start
in deploy/jms : copy the proper db file from examples AND change the hsqldb-state file in conf/login-conf.xml : set the proper authorisation abd of course deploy your database properly. My run.sh kept hammering on State Manager. I reviewed again and started again and it works (I am using JBOSS 4.0.0.RC2). Only, my next failure is now with the KeyGenerator service: the sar has a hard-coded reference to DefaultDs :-( Does your jboss system start up properly, without error messages? Did you browse through the jmx-console?
