That is the solution we are currently using on JBoss. It may be a JBoss CMP solution, but it's definitely not possible on Websphere, and I don't know whether it's possible in the other major app servers.
And the EJB spec gives us no indication whether that should be supported. This is my problem with EJB. It is an insufficient spec to allow portability, and we need to be portable.
