I re-installed my JDK1.5 and the problem was resolved. Once JBoss 4.0.2 was running, I methodically added jars to the new JDK1.5/jre/lib/ext directory until I could determine the exact cause of the problem. And this worked. It seems that I had put j2ee.jar into the jre/libs/ext directory. And that caused the specific error. I learned many good lessons from this ordeal; most important lesson learned: JBoss RULES!
