Which version of Sybase ASE (I suppose) are you using??? Until ASE 11.9.2 only TransactSQL left outer join syntax is supported (t1*=t2), from 12.0 and after (12.5.x) also the ANSI syntax is supported (left outer join t1 on t2.id=t1.id). Ciao
