your method is simpler then what I figured out, certailnly:

Context securityCtx = null;
  | AuthenticationManager securityMgr = null;
  | InitialContext iniCtx = new InitialContext();
  | securityCtx = (Context) iniCtx.lookup("java:comp/env/security");
  | securityMgr = (AuthenticationManager) securityCtx.lookup("securityMgr");
  | Subject subject = securityMgr.getActiveSubject();
  | return subject.getPrincipals();
