genman, this *IS* a fresh install:

1.) untar the .tar.bz
2.) set JAVA_HOME correctly
3.) cd to the untarred JBoss dir
4.) bin/run.sh

the md5-sums of the archives are ok... 

.oO( a lot of thinking and trying )

It was something in my jre/lib/ext dir:

commons-logging.jar

I think it collided with log4j somehow ....
