You are right that we shouldn't overwrite JDK classes, unfortunatelly we have to. JDK 1.4.2 contains only DOM2 the Xerces 2.6/2.7 releases need DOM3 interfaces. hence you have to have those interfaces in the ear.
If you ask me, DOM should not be in the JDK, it does not have Suns release cycle so why is it bound by it.
