Hi,
I did a search on the bug database and the tomcat user and dev lists and I can't find anything that says there are errors with Tomcat and its poolmanager.
Do you have any links etc?

you said you are using Tomcat4.12.
If I am not wrong there are known problems with that Tomcat version.
Check the developer mailing list, and also the mail wit subject:
"closing db connections in release() is a seriously bad idea"
