Have you tried to get it out of the request.  Try finding 
dbforms/examples/bookstore/tests/httpSnooper.jsp and including it in
your page.  If I recall correctly, when you set the filter -- a
parameter is set in the request with the filter value.  That means in an
interceptor you could pull out the filter value and insert it there. 
The trick would be to figure out what dbforms is setting the parameter
name as, and I think looking at the output of httpSnooper.jsp would tell
you -- of course you could always look at the source too.
