OK, in the meantime I've got it:
It depends on the name of my custom input field:

This is not working:

<input type="input" name="search_str" class="clsInputStyle"/>

This is working:

<input type="input" name="CTOsearch" class="clsInputStyle"/>

I think there was a confusion of the dbforms parser reagarding my naming.
