Thanks to all. Well I feel like a spoon. No file with .java extention loaded and basic emac / xemacs. Load a file with .java and everything works. Modify my path statement to include my /java/bin and I get compile errors. Everythings working. Just need to fix the program Thanks to all for the advice. I thought I was jumping a too big hurdle but I've managed to grasp xemacs and JDE at the same time.
