Help debugging

I'd like to watch the values of some variables while I step through a program. I
have tried "locals" but no luck. It suggests compiling w/ "-g." I have tried
compiling (specific class I am interested in, called by a main elsewhere) w/
"-g," but still no luck....

I have tried "Print..." as well, but - of course - also no luck....

Sorry for what I presume is a mundane question, but I'm clueless here.
