I actually did, but for reasons to me unknown, I was having problems
with --no-init-file as well, there must have been some other issue that
I was not aware of, since when yesterday after upgrading to 20.4 I tried
it again, I was able to pinpoint the problem, albeit after a significant
amount of effort.
I am sorry if I wasted everybody's time, that was not my intention, I've
been using emacs for a long time, and this is really the first time I
had so much trouble in getting something to work.

offending code in the old tinylibm.el file just redefined defcustom in a
way that the definition of the variable still worked, just the :set part
