auto complition of variables

there is one feature in emacs i miss, which i found in the Alpha editor:

when typing a variable name, hitting control-tab tried to complete the
name by using previously defined variables, methods, build-in names ...

does anybody know how to achieve this or where to find the appropriate
lisp packages?
