You have to set the indentation in a hook function for java-mode (which
jde-mode inherits)--at least in recent java-modes. I believe the latest
version of java-mode removes this requirement but I haven't had time to
investigate. Anyway the "convoluted" code, which I wrote that way for a
reason and which you copied from the FAQ, works if executed. You might want
to consider the possibility that your hook function never gets executed.
