How to link jde-global-classpath to $CLASSPATH environment variable?

Hi folks

I tried to link  the jde-global-classpath to the environment variable,
$CLASSPATH but no luck.

The following setting in the .emacs file does not seem to work:
(setq jde-global-classpath "$CLASSPATH")

I just don't want to link the  jde-global-classpath to 'hard' values such as
"/usr/jdk1.2/".

Any hints?
