I am using:

GNU Emacs 20.6.1 (i386-*-nt5.0.2195) of Tue Feb 29 2000 on buffy
jdok-version's value is 
"1.10 (beta) $Date: 2000/04/26 15:24:42 $"
JDE 2.1.6beta23

I do not, nor have ever, experienced that behaviour.  I can compile just
fine.  As you can see I am running 2000 and 20.6.1.
