EFS is just a way to read/write files using ftp; I don't see how that
should affect the Xemacs mode.

Here's a wild guess, though:  If the file you are getting w/ efs
happens to begin with a line like:

// -*- Mode: Java -*-

it would override the default mode setting (of JDE mode) for .java files.
