Sam,
I was having this problem as well, which seems to be lisp [efs?] related.
In my case the problem appears when accessing a remote .java file using efs.
For apparently related info see:
http://x74.deja.com/[ST_rn=ps]/getdoc.xp?AN=589920480&CONTEXT=963869232.1702
However, symlinks do not seem to be the real culprit, as a local file in
/tmp accessed via efs generates the same errors.
My workaround was to mount my remote .java files using NFS and abandon
EFS.
