Thanks.. That did it. The problem was I had a setting for 2 nested in
the middle of the .emacs file.. And despite my setting it to 4 later in
the same file, it still used 2. It still used 2 even after I modified
the setting in a running emacs. I was getting the impression I was just
not reading the faq right and was setting the wrong value, so I sent off
an email.
