The problem was my hand-tweeking of the .emacs file.
Always use meta-X customize-variable!

Subject: Debugger fails to start
Since upgrading to JDE 2.2.3, 'JDEbug Start Debugger' gets the error 'Wrong type
argument: stringp nil'. I have the semantic, speedbar and elib modules
installed. I reviewed the JDEbug users guide and everything seems to be in
place. Note: Now I get the same error if I revert to JDE 2.2.2.
Does anyone know what causes this problem?
