This problem only occurs after calling jde-sort-imports in an XEmacs
session. Since jde-sort-imports uses sort-fold-case wouldn't
jde-sort-imports cause a stack trace as well? I tried doing an explicit
(require 'sort) in my currently running XEmacs and gnus still dies.

For example, follow this process:
start XEmacs
(setq debug-on-error t), so that you can see the stack trace
run Gnus (5.8.3)
read a message, this works fine here
quit Gnus
open java file with JDE
M-x jde-sort-imports, does cool sort of imports
start Gnus
read a message from a newsgroup/mailbox, gives stack trace
