I had the same problem on Linux RH6.2 using the IBM 1.3 vm However this was with xemacs. After a change to GNU Emacs everything including the debugger has improved performance. Also many of the problems I had with multiple versions of the same file were solved. I find the debugger now ok to use. Maybe if you are already using GNU EMACS you will find an improvement if you go to the IBM vm which is generally considered faster. However I also use the KARMIRA deugger which is faster and slicker.
