Hi,
I was annoyed just the same to use the mouse to get to the
pop up menu and dealing with errors when the mous was not over
the frame to begin with...
Anyways, I since put this
(setq jde-complete-function 'jde-complete-minibuf)
in my .emacs and this suits me (at least) much better.
