Why not use DNS SRV records (see RFC 2052) to look up jabber servers.
Right now, my taral.net A record is tied up with a web site, and I can't
change it. But I could quite happily enter the following into my DNS:

jabber.tcp IN SRV 0 0 5222 jabber

to make it use jabber.taral.net:5222 to connect.

What do you think?
