Realizing that pushing Jabber through a HTTP proxy is an abuse of the proxy
protocol, it is not at all unreasonable for a proxy to fail to support this
abuse, and present the behavior you see.

Did it 'hang' or did it 'disconnect'?

This is how my proxy server behaves. If your local proxy administrators are
willing to allow you to use Jabber through the proxy, perhaps they can provide
assistance, or if you are your proxy admin, you can provide us with details on
the software type and version?

Well, my HTTP proxy, for security reasons, does not support passing Keepalive
at all (except on HTTPS), and also closes down all established connections
after a 'reasonable' length of time, based on activity.

>From the standpoint of providing a secure network, having random protocols
all trying 'tunnel' over HTTP is a security and debugging nightmare.
