PS -- is there any non-visual basic, perhaps C or C++ library for doing client
or server work available yet? I'm thinking about starting one for my own use...
Yes, there are many client libraries. The projects page on DevZone lists nine, of which 5 can be used from C++, and it's missing libjabber, which I think can be found as part of the everybuddy client (which is also unlisted on the clients page, somehow...)
