Err, I'm pretty sure it's a '%' that you can use within the email.  Sure
your not looking at a UUCP address format?

    And email format is one thing.  JIDs are URI compliant.  the internet
email addresses specificed within the RFCs aren't always 100% URI compliant.

    Think web URL's instead of email addresses..  8-)
