[JDEV] One more newbie question

Hi,   I'm a newbie with Jabber and very impressed and I try to understand how the system work... My questions are : how does a client receive his messages ? Does he need to have a permanent connection to a server (tcp socket) which send him his new received messages or does he regularly ask a server for his new messages ? To be a little bit clearer : is it a real connected system, or does the client send system messages to his server to say "I'm here", "I'm here", ... "I'm leaving".   Thanks for your help   Michael (from Paris)
