Yes, this bug on solaris would have caused truncation of cdata in many places.  It 
must be particular to a certain OS/GCC combination as I know of a few solaris installs 
that haven't experienced it.

You can try cvs right now to see if it makes a difference, but I can't guarantee there 
isn't other bugs in cvs at the moment :)
