Thanks for the reply.  I've perused the entire archive from the jdev and sockets 
mailing list and am a bit confused as to the current state of Jabber.  When you say 
"old" libjabber, does that mean it is no longer used?  And why would the cvs version 
of jpoll not be the newest?  Is it being replaced by something else?  What is CCM?  
The replacement for jpoll?

Sorry about the inept questions, but I haven't been able to find good documentation 
explaining any of this.  And I'm in the hot-seat right now because I can't get jpoll 
to build and my boss wants to see something running yesterday.
