Take a look at the XML Encryption Standard from the w3. In the security JIG we've been looking at ways we can use this for a new standard form of encryption in Jabber. It includes many ciphers in it such as AES and 3DES so it's pretty slick. Hopefully some of the other projects of the JIG members will mellow out soon and we can continue our discussions.
