Let me see if I can somewhat cynically summarise:
- a new protocol is more exciting to design and build
- old protocols are often blocked by firewalls owned by people 
  who don't want files transferred through them.

Personally I'd rather see a traditional protocol, with the boring 
old security and robustness issues worked out of it.
