Don't exactly know whatr you mean by "native". Actually there is not much native to groupchat beyond <presence/> messages.
Basic avatars are PNG images. Fetched from URLs or from server side storage (URLs preferred :-) More advanced avatars will soon show animations. The avatar description (what PNG-URL, what animation plugin, data-URL for the plugin) is from a storage:client:avatar chunk. Participants post a digest of their avatar to the room. New participants receive the digest with the initial <presence/> and compare it with thier avatar cache. If different they fetch the changed avatar. In addition clients will use the role and more information to add whatever tags like icons to the avatar, e.g. stars for admins, small stars for admins of other channels of the same server, big stars for owners, etc. I am working on these avatars for quite a while now.
