I use FreeBSD, and maybe it is because of a stricter interpretation of the RFC in one of its subsystems. A good thing actually. I tested a few commandline tools. ping(8) and traceroute(8) don't like the _ either. dig(1), host(1) and nslookup(8) don't mind, they find the hostname correctly. Concluding I think it should be changed.
