Were both accounts you tried it with on jabber.org? Maybe it could be something to do with s2s between my jabberd server and jabber.org? I'm fishing for ideas here, I paste the same XML from my account and it doesn't get there but messages are working because I've tried other clients that send only plain text.

This it true. jadc2s did have some XML regeneration bugs in the past, but we seem to have got all of those out.
