I'd prefere to use the same port for both ... with and without SSL. We already need two ports ...

Using the same port can be done by looking at the first bytes ... "are they XML or arn't they?" ... or by extending the protocol to allow it to switch to SSL. After SASL is integrated this shouldn't be a problem anymore.
